On November 9th 2018 in Geneva, in front of an audience composed of leading personalities and representatives of the Swiss watch industry, the 2018 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève unveiled its prize list, including the Innovation Watch Prize awarded to Krayon for its Everywhere Horizon.
A fitting reward for an ingenious complication watch that calculates sunrise and sunset times everywhere.
« Until now, in watchmaking, this function had to be set for a specific point on earth. I decided to take a direction that no-one had explored before, and develop this purpose-built, integrated movement » says Rémi Maillat, founder of Krayon.
« The idea behind this timepiece is that anyone, anywhere in the world, can know the exact time at which they can contemplate these spectacles of nature and life.Because it's the work of an engineer, it appears to be a very mathematical, scientific watch when it's really something quite romantic » he added.
After the presentation in May 2017 of the first Everywhere watch, Rémi Maillat presented in 2018 a new custom timepiece, Everywhere Horizon. On land and at sea, the path of the sun across the sky underpins the notion of time and is even a way to measure its passing. Krayon's engineers nurtured their dream to be able to know sunrise and sunset times at any point on the globe, thanks to a mechanical movement. By making this dream reality, they have achieved something totally unprecedented in watchmaking: a universal mechanical calculator that gives the exact sunrise and sunset times.
Everywhere Horizon reaches this seemingly simple result by combining the four parameters that influence sunrise and sunset calculations. First latitude and longitude, which geographically define a point on Earth, then the UTC time zone, and lastly the date and month. The watch's wearer sets each one as required to then see the precise hour at which the sun will appear and disappear, in the place of his choice and on the day he wishes.

This hand indicates the latitude parameter set by the wearer for the calculation of sunrise and sunset times. Currently indicates 0°. The latitude can be adjusted from 60°North to 60°South. Beyond these latitudes there would be no sunrise and sunset every day throughout the year.
The longest of the two hands indicates the longitude parameter defined by the wearer for the calculation of the sunrise and sunset times. Currently displays 100° East
Indicates the UTC time zone parameter used to calculate and display the sunrise and sunset times. Currently shows +8. The setting can be made in 30-minute intervals, allowing you to select half time zones, which are used, for example, in India.
When switching to daylight saving time (DST), follow the direction of the DST arrow to make a one-hour adjustment of the UTC parameter.
Indicates which function is selected for adjustment by the function selector switch.
All settings are made via the crown.
The crown has 3 positions: The first one for manual winding of the movement, the second one for setting the time, and the third one is multifunction. It allows the setting of the function selected by the function selector (date, latitude, longitude or utc). all settings are made in both directions and without limits.

The concept of the USS (Universal Sunrise Sunset) calibre is nothing short of exceptional. All 595 components have been designed and manufactured to order, including the balance spring. Thanks to this, Rémi Maillat have succeeded in producing a surprisingly compact movement - given its immense complexity - measuring 6.5 mm high. This ingenious calibre is able to combine parameters that give opposing influence in result of Sunrise and Sunset times. It also incorporates an equation of time, a secret function that is not shown on the dial, used for the calculations. The USS calibre is fitted with four differentials, 84 gear assemblies and a total of 145 gear parts. Three patents have been filed to protect these inventions. Automatically wound by a gold micro-rotor, the USS calibre beats at a frequency of 3 Hz and delivers a 86-hour power reserve.
